Following the end of the Second World War, Ben Mellen traveled throughout Europe trading in gold and precious gems.
After hard fought successes he eventually found passage for himself, his wife and infant son, Richard, on a ship bound for America. He established our company in New York City in 1951 and soon relocated from the Bowery to 47th Street where it has been for more than 60 years.
Ben Mellen is largely credited within the industry for being among the very first to encourage an appetite for the wholesale marketing and trading of large diamonds which were at that time relegated predominantly to the retail sector.
By 1985, when his son, Richard, joined the business, Ben Mellen & Son was solidly established in the top hierarchy of the diamond trade having participated in the purchase, sale and manufacture of a great number of storied stones including The Indore Pear Shapes, The Tiffany Yellow and The Marcos Blue.
The following years added momentum and growth for our company and Mellen Inc. found itself participating in the manufacture and sale of a number of important diamonds such as the Winston Legacy and the Pink Star, as well as notable Sapphires, Rubies and Emeralds.
Today, Mellen Inc. resides in the International Gem Tower staffed by Richard Mellen, his son Alex and Ben Mellen's daughter, Deborah. With singular expertise we continue our tradition of supplying exceptional treasures for our Clients.
